  5. The enclosed file is a self-extracting archive of two Disk Copy 800k disk
  6. images.  To use, download, double-click the downloaded file (this decompresses
  7. it), and use Disk Copy to create the disks.  Disk Copy can be found in the
  8. Utilities folder posted here.
  9.  
  10. Please note that LaserWriter 8.2 Software is only available on 800k disk
  11. images.
  12.  
  13. We would suggest that all customers using previous versions of LaserWriter 8
  14. upgrade to the LaserWriter 8.2 driver.  There are some major fixes and some new
  15. enhancements that make the driver easier to use.
  16.  
  17. New "Setup" Functionality
  18. -------------------------
  19. The Chooser "Setup" button now automatically queries the printer, selects
  20. the appropriate PPD file, and configures the paper trays accordingly.
  21. Previous versions of LaserWriter 8 required you to click "Setup" in the
  22. Chooser, click on "Auto Setup" to select the PPD file, then click on
  23. "Configure" to set up paper trays.  All of this is now completed in step by
  24. clicking on "Setup" button. After the printer is set up, you still have the
  25. option of manually configuring PPDs and paper trays by clicking on the
  26. "Setup" button a second time.
  27.  
  28. Job Destination No Longer "Sticky"
  29. ----------------------------------
  30. LaserWriter driver v8.2 now always reverts back to "Printer" as the
  31. destination in the Print dialog box, instead of retaining the previous print
  32. job destination. For example, if the printer was were the last job went, the
  33. printer was the default destination for the next job. This happened when
  34. "Printer", "File", or "Fax" was selected.  This caused problems with
  35. inadvertant faxes on PostScript Fax capable printers.  If the most recent job
  36. had "Fax" as the destination of the job, then the next print job was
  37. automatically set for "Fax".  In addition, there are also some applications
  38. that do not provide the print dialog box when using certain features of their
  39. program. Since you can't change the destination, this can become a problem.
  40. However, with the LaserWriter 8.2 driver, this is no longer a problem.
  41.  
  42. Shift Tab Feature
  43. -----------------
  44. Editable fields in all dialogs which currently support tabbing from field to
  45. field now support reverse direction tabbing using the shift tab feature.
  46. Applications adding fields to existing Print and Page Setup dialogs with
  47. editable fields obtain this feature.
  48.  
  49. Program Fixes
  50. -------------
  51. One of the main problems fixed in this release is where PICT files with
  52. rotated objects would print incorrectly.  This was most evident with PICT
  53. images from MacDraw Pro, and exported by other applications - rotated objects
  54. in the PICT would not be printed at the correct location or angle.
  55.  
  56. One other problem that is now fixed, occurred when you tried printing to the
  57. original LaserWriter (PostScript Ver 23.0). It would typically result in a
  58. PostScript error.
  59.  
  60. There are other various fixes in LaserWriter 8.2 that address both driver
  61. and 3rd party application issues.  Apple is suggesting that if you are using
  62. a previous version of the LaserWriter 8 driver, that you upgrade to
  63. LaserWriter driver 8.2. Apple recommends that you use this update for both
  64. the fixes and additional features.

  84. Information About LaserWriter 8 Printer Driver Version 8.2

  86. This document contains some important reminders and some information that is
  87. not in the manual that comes with your printer. You may want to print this
  88. document and keep it for future reference.
  89.  
  90. The software on this disk includes version 8.2 of the Apple LaserWriter 8
  91. printer driver, which works with many Apple LaserWriter printers. This document
  92. includes information about the software, as well as about several of the
  93. printers. 
  94.  
  95. Installing the Printer Driver Software
  96.  
  97. The manual that comes with your printer contains detailed installation
  98. instructions. You cannot install the software by dragging their icons; you must
  99. use the Installer program as described in the printer manual.
  100.  
  101. Please note: before installing the printer software, you should restart your
  102. system with all Extensions turned off. To do this, hold down the Shift key
  103. while you restart your computer.
  104.  
  105. The Installer does not remove versions of the LaserWriter printer driver that
  106. are older than version 8.0. You may remove these files from your System Folder
  107. if you no longer need them. 
  108.  
  109. The Installer does remove older versions of the LaserWriter 8 driver (for
  110. example, LaserWriter 8.0) and replaces the PPD files for Apple LaserWriter
  111. printers with the latest versions.
  112.  
  113. When you choose Easy Install, the Installer places the following files in the
  114. System Folder on your hard disk.  LaserWriter 8 is placed in the Extensions
  115. folder. The PPD files which are used by LaserWriter 8 are in a folder called
  116. Printer Descriptions also located in the Extensions folder.  The Apple Printer
  117. Utility and LaserWriter Utility are placed in the System Folder.
  118.  
  119. Please note: if the Installer is unable to remove old files from your hard
  120. disk, it will terminate the installation procedure. If this happens, please
  121. remove old copies of the LaserWriter 8 driver and the PPD files. Run the
  122. installer again.
  123.  
  124. About PPD Files
  125.  
  126. The LaserWriter 8 driver uses PostScript Printer Description (PPD) files to
  127. determine the characteristics of the printers it uses. PPD files contain
  128. information about individual PostScript printers. For example, PPD files
  129. describe the paper-handling capabilities of printers: the number of paper
  130. trays, their capacity, and the paper sizes they handle.
  131.  
  132. To take full advantage of your printer’s features, click the Setup button in
  133. the Chooser when selecting your printer for the  first time, or after
  134. installing an additional option. This procedure causes the LaserWriter driver
  135. to query the printer for its characteristics and associate a particular PPD
  136. file with the printer.
  137.  
  138. About Creating EPS Files
  139.  
  140. You can create an Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) file in many application
  141. programs by clicking File in the Print dialog box, then clicking Save.  When
  142. you create an EPS file, note the following:
  143.  
  144. •  Creating EPS files with the All option selected in the Font Inclusion pop-up
  145. menu in the EPS dialog box can result in very large files. If you include all
  146. fonts in an EPS file and save the file with the Unlimited Downloadable Fonts
  147. option selected, an extremely large file may be created.
  148.  
  149. •  If you create an EPS file with no fonts included and open the document,
  150. fonts in the document appear on your screen, but Courier may be substituted
  151. when you print.
  152.  
  153. •  When you create EPS files with preview information included, other
  154. applications that create their own PostScript code may not display the EPS file
  155. accurately on the screen.
  156.  
  157. About the LaserWriter Utility and the Apple Printer Utility
  158.  
  159. Installing the LaserWriter 8 driver and printer software places the Apple
  160. Printer Utility program in your System Folder. The Apple Printer Utility
  161. program is designed to work with the LaserWriter 16/600 PS printer and
  162. succeeding releases of new printers.
  163.  
  164. To configure and work with previously released LaserWriter models, use the
  165. LaserWriter Utility that came with your printer. The LaserWriter Utility is
  166. also provided on your printer software disks. You can  install the LaserWriter
  167. Utility on your computer’s hard disk by using the Custom install option of the
  168. Installer.
  169.  
  170. Using the LaserWriter 8 Driver With LaserWriter Printers
  171.  
  172. When using the LaserWriter 8 driver, you should be aware of the following
  173. situations.  Some happen with all LaserWriter printers, and others happen only
  174. with specific models.
  175.  
  176. All LaserWriter Printers
  177.  
  178. •  The LaserWriter 8 driver allows some printers to print using a larger
  179. imageable print area on the page. If your printer does so, you may find that
  180. text in some documents reflows or is clipped to fit the new imageable area. To
  181. maintain your document format when printing to different printer models,
  182. deselect the Larger Print Area option in the Page Setup Options dialog box.
  183.  
  184. •  Some older printers with small amounts of memory will not print documents
  185. containing large numbers of fonts unless the Unlimited Downloadable Fonts
  186. option is selected in the Page Setup Options dialog box. If a document using
  187. multiple fonts doesn't print using the LaserWriter 8 driver, try selecting
  188. Unlimited Downloadable Fonts in the Page Setup Options dialog box and print
  189. again.
  190.  
  191. •  Printing multiple documents with the Finder may not work if the documents
  192. have been created by different application programs.
  193.  
  194. •  If you encounter a time-out (PostScript error -8993) when printing multiple
  195. copies of large and complex documents in the background, print the documents
  196. one at a time or select foreground printing to avoid this problem.
  197.  
  198. LaserWriter IIg and IIf
  199.  
  200. •  When you select paper sources from the First From and Remaining From pop-up
  201. menus in the Print dialog box, selecting Manual Feed for either source sets the
  202. driver to print the first page from the manual feed tray.
  203.  
  204. •  The US Legal paper size has been changed on some LaserWriter IIf/IIg
  205. printers to be more compatible with other Apple LaserWriter printers.  If your
  206. legal-sized documents no longer fit on the page, select Larger Print Area in
  207. the Page Setup Options dialog box.
  208.  
  209. •  Some form-printing applications cannot print forms using the Layout settings
  210. in the Page Setup dialog box.
  211.  
  212. LaserWriter II NT and II NTX
  213.  
  214. •  If you select both the Smooth Graphics and the Invert Image options in the
  215. Page Setup Options dialog box, a PostScript error results.
  216.  
  217. •  Do not use the B5 tray to print envelopes on a LaserWriter II NT.  Use the
  218. letter tray instead.
  219.  
  220. LaserWriter Pro 600 and 630
  221.  
  222. •  You cannot use Auto Select as the Paper Source in the Print dialog box to
  223. print envelopes from the optional envelope feeder.
  224.  
  225. •  When you print at a resolution of 600 dots per inch (dpi), bitmapped images
  226. may appear with lines across the image.
  227.  
  228. LaserWriter Pro 810
  229.  
  230. •  With some graphics applications, bitmapped graphics will be reduced by 25%
  231. in size when printed with the Precision Bitmap Alignment option in the Page
  232. Setup Options dialog box.
  233.  
  234. •  When you create a PostScript file with a LaserWriter Pro 810 selected as the
  235. printer and send the file to a printer that uses PostScript Level 1, a
  236. PostScript error will occur.
  237.  
  238. LaserWriter 16/600 PS
  239.  
  240. •  If Tray Switching is turned on and you have installed the optional 500-sheet
  241. feeder, and it contains the same paper size as the 250-sheet feeder, you should
  242. set up the driver to use the 500-sheet feeder as the preferred paper source for
  243. optimal printing performance.  See Chapter 5 in the manual that came with your
  244. printer for instructions on selecting the 500-sheet feeder as the preferred
  245. paper source.

  247. Using the LaserWriter 8 Driver With the Kanji System
  248.  
  249. To print Japanese characters using KanjiTalk or the Japanese Language Kit, your
  250. system must have WorldScript II version 7.1.1 or later.
  251.  
  252.  
  253. Using the LaserWriter 8 Driver With Application Programs
  254.  
  255. Some application programs do not yet take advantage of the new features of the
  256. LaserWriter 8 driver or have small incompatibilities that result in printing
  257. problems. If you experience problems with a program, contact the publisher of
  258. the program. In some cases a newer version of the program may be available. 
  259.  
  260. The following list describes some special cases that you should be aware of
  261. when working with some application programs. (There may be other problems with
  262. these programs, or with other programs, not mentioned in this document.)
  263.  
  264. •  With many applications, you cannot use the Flip Horizontal, Flip Vertical,
  265. landscape page orientation, and Layout option in the Page Setup dialog box in
  266. combination.  
  267.  
  268. Aldus Freehand 4.0
  269.  
  270. •  Documents do not print correctly when you choose a page layout from the
  271. Layout pop-up menu in the Page Setup dialog box.
  272. •  EPS files created using the LaserWriter 8 driver from within Freehand cannot
  273. be used in other programs. 
  274.  
  275. Aldus PageMaker 5.0
  276.  
  277. •  Rotated graphics may not print correctly when you hold down the Option key
  278. and click Print in the Print dialog box.
  279. •  You cannot print legal-size documents from the paper cassette of the
  280. Personal LaserWriter 320; print such documents by selecting Manual Feed or by
  281. holding down the Option key and clicking Print in the Print dialog box.

  285. •  Rotated or filled polygons print as solid gray objects. 
  286. •  Gradient fills may not print when copied into other programs.

  290. •  When you select the Substitute Fonts option in the Page Setup Options dialog
  291. box, text may be incorrectly spaced if fonts Geneva, New York or Monaco are
  292. used.

  296. •  When you choose a page layout from the Layout pop-up menu in the Page Setup
  297. dialog box, underlined TrueType fonts may not print.

  302. has been saved without preview information.

  307. dialog box, documents that contain EPS graphics may appear clipped when
  308. printed.

  366. text in Watermark, the entire document rotates when printed.
